What is an NPI Number?
The NPI (National Provider Identifier) Number is a 10-digit numerical identifier used to identify an individual provider or a health care entity. The NPI is a unique identification number for covered health care providers. In the administrative and financial transactions implemented under HIPAA, covered health care services and all health programs and health care clearinghouses must use the NPIs. The NPI must be used in HIPAA standards transactions in place of legacy provider identifiers.
What is NPPES?
NPPES is a database administered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the electronic transmission of health information by standardizing the format of unique identification for healthcare providers and health plans.
What is the NPPES registry?
The NPI Registry is a free catalog of all dynamic National Provider Identifier (NPI) records. Medical services suppliers procure their special 10-digit NPIs to distinguish themselves in a standard manner all through their industry. Both the individual and business NPIs apply through the CMS National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES). The NPI (National Provider Identifier) Registry allows the NPPES (National Plan and Provider Enumeration System) system to search for providers. Following the NPPES Data Dissemination Notice, all information generated by the NPI Registry is given. There is no fee for the NPI Register to be used.
The NPI Registry NPI Details page shows the user an individual provider’s or organization’s NPPES health care provider data.
